The LTC3895 can be used as a surge stopper with minor changes to the slide 5 schematic. This graph shows a nominal 12V input voltage that produces a 12V output. Prior to the surge the 3895 is operating at 100% duty cycle with the input being passed to the output. When the input voltage surges up to 100V, the 3895 starts switching and VOUT is regulated to 18V or some other user selectable output voltage which protects down stream devices.
